Went to an SCCA meeting tonight and wandered through a car show with a few SCCA members.
It was a lot of fun, but that's not why I'm musing. At the meeting a member asked who owns that little Sonic. I admitted to it (proudly) and we talked for a bit, him complimenting how fun it looks. Another member expressed the same thing.
The little Sonic seems to surprise everyone, and it certainly seems to have a lot of charm. Hell, I love the little guy. So what am I musing about?
As some of you know, I've set up this plan to get a house, then a Suburban, then a year later trade the Sonic in and get a Corvette. But I can already tell trading the Sonic is going to be tough. I'm coming up on a year with it and the damn thing just keeps growing on me.
I did some mental math earlier, and now I'm starting to think I should keep the Sonic, save a little longer, and just buy a Corvette with the Sonic staying as my daily/winter/hauler. Sure a Suburban would be better for hauling, but I don't think it could ever have the intangible charm of my Sonic. And having a Corvette will be awesome, but I actually think I'll be sad to let the Sonic go.
What's the point of all this? I don't know, it's 20 til 2am and I don't want to sleep...
Honestly though, I think it's just another example of what make hot hatches great. They'll never be the fastest cars in the world. They'll never be the most practical cars in the world. They'll never be the most efficient, or the most exciting, or the prettiest, or the most affordable.
But they'll always be the best at being good enough at everything you do with them. They are so ready and willing to do anything and everything that they exude a certain sort of charm that a supercar will never match. They may not be the best cars in the world, but damned if they won't try their little hearts out to be
TL;DR: I'm never selling my Sonic, but I'm still buying a Corvette someday

As long as you have something to haul your planelopnik around, you'll be fine! And it'll be ten times better on gas than a Suburban.
